Senior banker’s exciting new direction

After 30 years of service with a major lender, Scott Wills has taken an exciting new direction in his career, inspired by his dealings with Smartline mortgage advisers during his time with the bank.

“I was attracted to Smartline’s model of engaging and working with franchisees – and the more I see, the more impressed I am,” Scott says.

“The systems are fantastic and I’m surrounded by great people. Smartline management has developed an outstanding organisational culture, which has led to some outstanding business-wide and individual franchisee results, as well as many happy customers.”

The move to mortgage broking was a natural evolution in Scott’s career and perfectly matched his passion for developing long-term relationships with clients.

While Scott’s business has only been fully operational for a short time following receipt of his accreditations, he has already purchased a book of mortgage customers and is working closely with six potential new clients.

“My marketing to date has included newsletters, bulk emails, word of mouth, and Facebook, and they’re all going very well,” Scott says.

“I’m working towards employing a part-time person for one day a week and, eventually, engaging lending advisers or working with other advisers who are as passionate about service and growing customer relationships as I am.”

Scott’s tips for getting started in your business:

Have confidence in your ability.

Know that it takes time to get your business moving.

Don’t be shy.

Be sure to confidently tell clients and prospective clients what you can do for them.  You are, after all, the mortgage expert, so ensure customers have confidence in your ability and breadth of knowledge.

Discipline and organisation are very important.

Ultimately, these two personal qualities ensure you’re always focused on, and on top of, meeting clients’ needs and priorities.

Be a duck on the pond.

Legs going flat-out under the water, but all calm and control on the surface. This will inspire confidence with clients.
