Southport – the Gold Coast’s CBD

Southport is the Gold Coast’s Central Business District (CBD), and has played a pivotal role on the Gold Coast and in South East Queensland for more than a century. It was one of the first coastal resort towns in the region, later becoming the administrative and commercial centre of the Gold Coast.

Area Profile

The size of Southport is approximately 18 square kilometres. It has 17 parks covering nearly 11% of total area.

The population of Southport in 2006 was 24,105 people. By 2011 the population was 28,327 showing a population growth of 17% in the area during that time.

The predominant age group in Southport is 15-24 years.

Households in Southport are primarily childless couples and are likely to be repaying between $1800 – $2400 per month on mortgage repayments.

In general, people in Southport work in a non-specific occupation.

In 2006, 47.0% of the homes in Southport were owner-occupied compared with 41.2% in 2011.
