Work on Cycleway Begins, The Cairns Post 30 August 2021

WORK has started on one of Far North Queensland’s longest off-road bikeways. The new 7km Bruce Highway – Cairns Southern Access Cycleway will create an active transport link for walkers, bike riders and runners from Gordonvale to Cairns. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the project aimed to meet increased demand for active transport in the Far North.

Tourism Revival Begins At Home, The Cairns Post 30 August 2021

THE Far North’s tourism industry is preparing a push to build back visitor numbers through spring, summer and into next year – charting a course to recovery when border closures eventually ease. Despite Qantas chief Alan Joyce’s dream of restarting international flights before Christmas, Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen said the focus had to be on domestic markets first.

THE introduction of a new quarantine facility near Toowoomba is being hailed as a big win in getting international students back to Cairns. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s plans to build the quarantine hub at Wellcamp is being seen as a critical first step in the return of overseas pupils at James Cook University.

A NEW triweekly air service linking Adelaide and Cairns is expected to ease the pressure on struggling tourism businesses through a direct $25m Far Northern boost.On Thursday Virgin introduced an extra 26,000 seats per year from Adelaide, adding to Jetstar’s daily services to and from the South Australian capital.

ANOTHER southern buyer has snapped up an iconic Cairns property with the Grand Hotel and neighbouring properties with 14-storey development potential changing hands. Brisbane-based Stronghold Investment Management has bought the landmark Cairns pub and adjoining blocks for what is believed to be about a $13m price-tag – up from $8.5m when the sites last sold in 2019.

THE slow trickle of funds from a $600 million support package to Covid ravaged Far Northern businesses has drawn scorn. Advance Cairns chairman Nick Trompf said the State Government had been spruiking $20m had been provided to the state’s small business comunity but estimated just $2m had so far flowed into this region. However, Cairns MP Michael Healy blamed a lack of applications for the drip-feed.

THE waitlist for a new stateof-the-art Cairns high school is growing, as construction of the campus hits a significant milestone. The largest area of Newman Catholic College, in Smithfield, now has a roof, paving the way for internal works to be done for the school’s opening in January. The college has reached its maximum number of 135 enrolments for 2022, and the waitlist is growing.

VISITING Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud has said it’s time to deliver Far North water security projects to lock in future prosperity of the region. On a flying tour Mr Littleproud visited James Cook University and the Tropical Reef Shipyard, and met with business leaders in a roundtable discussion on Monday.

HAPPY travellers have rated Cairns as the country’s top domestic holiday destination for 2021. While Covid restrictions have limited who can visit us, holiday-makers were more satisfied with their trip to the Far North than other destinations, comparison website Canstar Blue has found.
