Approval for boat ramp, The Cairns Post 21 Jun 2021

A DECISION has finally been made on controversial plans to build a new boat ramp at Yorkeys Knob after more than five years of planning and protests. The state government granted conditional approval for the $11m project late last year – but the green light was contingent on the federal government saying the work met its stringent environmental rules.

A SHOCK United Nations report recommending the Great Barrier Reef be listed as “in danger” has sent a shockwave through the Far North. The report has been labelled as “negative in tone” and not painting a full or accurate picture of the state of the Reef’s health. A downgrading of the Reef’s status threatens 64,000 jobs and $6.4bn in tourism revenue.

TRAVELLERS will be able to enjoy direct low fares travel between Cairns and Newcastle, with new flights taking off between the two popular holiday destinations starting Wednesday. Jetstar is launching a new three flight per-week service, which is operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft and will carry 6000 visitors between the two regions each month, delivering a significant tourism boost to both cities.

Vaccine hub launches, The Cairns Post 23 Jun 2021

PFIZER and AstraZeneca Covid vaccines are now available at a dedicated vaccine hub at the Cairns South Health Facility at Edmonton, with an estimated 700 people daily getting the jab. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) executive director of medical services Don Mackie said there were plans to establish a vaccine hub in Cairns’ northern suburbs as well.

A CONTROVERSIAL plan to build 23 homes on a single Cairns block has been approved with one Cairns councillor labelling the proposal the “best of a bad bunch”. Developer Bohemia Investment now has six years to subdivide a large residential block at 52 Prog-ress Rd in White Rock before the current approval lapses – and it will be a stark change for the site which currently has only one house.

A MULTIMILLION-dollar boost from the state government will deliver year-round flights from New Zealand to Cairns. The new services will deliver in excess of 16,000 additional seats into Cairns a year, a move described as a “clear vote of confidence in the region”.

Designs Revealed for City Congestion Buster The Cairns Post – 26 Jun 2021

THE FEDERAL government has revealed the design plans for the much-awaited $300m duplication of one of Cairns’ busiest roads. Work on the duplication of the Cairns Western Arterial Road will begin in 2022.Detailed design impressions for the upgrades have been released for public comment on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website.
