Tips for a budget holiday

June 26, 2018

School holidays have begun for some, and are around the corner in other states. With the kids at home, and with time off work, it’s time to kick back and have some fun.

Holiday fun, though, can be expensive. And if you are saving for a home deposit, or are up to the tilt in home loan repayments, it can be tricky to fully relax and enjoy.

To help you out, we’ve put together some tips for spending less this school holidays, so you can still have a good time.

Tips For Saving For A Holiday

Research Your Trip

If you want to head out of town, it’s worth taking time to do a bit of research. Check comparison websites for cheaper flights, and accommodation. Last minute deals often crop up, even in school holidays, so dedicate some time on the internet to finding out what’s available.

When you’ve settled on a destination, and made a booking, research the area. Public transport can be a cheaper alternative to hiring a car, so get to know routes and fares. Research free activities in the region, like visiting botanical gardens, going to the gallery, doing a forest walk, or taking kids down to the beach. Most metropolitan areas run free events during school holidays, so let Google be your guide.

Consider A House Swap

A house swap can be a free alternative to paying for expensive accommodation. Research house swap websites, and tee up with a family who wants to visit your hometown. Some people are also interested in swapping cars.

Pack Your Lunch

Trips can be expensive because on top of airfares and accommodation, you also have to feed your family. Without the comforts of home, eating costs add up. Alternatives include staying in self-contained accommodation, so you have access to a kitchen, so you can cook in the evenings. Even from a hotel, you can pack food to take out for the day, so you’re not depending on cafes and restaurants. Being a little organised goes a long way.

Take To Road Less Travelled

It can be tempting to hit the famous destinations, but taking the road less travelled is often less expensive, and means it’s easier to find accommodation. Talking to friends and using the internet to learn about destinations you’ve never heard about can lead to surprising finds.

Home Is Where The Holiday Is

With all the pressure to have fun, it can be tempting to try and do everything. But sometimes, relaxing at home can be the best use of your free time. And the bonus? It’s less expensive. Think of unusual or fun things to do close to home, and save on travel and accommodation expenses.
