Deb Smith

I am inspired by seeing ordinary people succeed. I just love seeing people who have set out to achieve a goal then work hard and get to where they wanted to go.

For example, my favourite clients are those I see who are far from ready when we meet. We start by working together to work out a plan for them to achieve their goals. Down the track, they will return to me and we will find a loan for them to buy that house they always wanted. This can take a few years but it’s always worth it!

As a broker, you get to play a critical role in helping people fulfil their dreams. 99 percent of the time I love what I do; it doesn’t feel like work as I get a real kick out of helping others reach their goals.

Becoming a mortgage adviser with Smartline was a decision I made after working for many, many years in a corporate environment. I needed to do something different – something for me. I had worked so hard for someone else, I felt it was time I saw the fruits of my labour. Sometimes you have to back yourself and make a bold move. Now, I still work as hard, but I do it because I want to – it’s my choice and I reap the rewards.

While I love my work for all these reasons, it also helps me achieve my own long term goal. I hope one day to have a farm with B&Bs and a space to run activities for visitors. This is my goal for my retirement and Smartline has provided the infrastructure and support I have needed to work towards this.

On females in the industry: I would say first up that it’s nice to have a balance in every industry! However, I do think female brokers can offer a slightly different service to their clients than male brokers as they tend to be naturally good at certain things. For example, many women are more caring by nature, and they tend to be better at multitasking and listening – all of these are attributes that can be brought to their role as a broker. Obviously, some men have these attributes too and some women don’t – it’s just a generalisation of the type of approach I often see from different brokers.

Favourite quote: Make today ridiculously amazing!

Favourite movie: Revenge of the Nerds. This movie takes me back to my childhood days, watching movies with my mates – it’s pure silliness! Being an adult is just so serious all the time, and we have to make big decisions that have an impact on so many aspects in our world. It’s so nice to stop and have a good belly laugh every once in a while, preferably one that’s so big you can’t breathe and your stomach hurts!
