I spent the first 16 years of my lending career at ANZ where I job-shared with fellow Smartline adviser Sharon Lee. We then left ANZ and founded Mortgage Force together in Victoria, which merged with Smartline in 2009. We are now both principals of our own Smartline franchises.
My favourite client story is the time I was able to arrange finance for a woman who had been through a very messy divorce. All the lenders she’d approached said no, but I delved into her situation more carefully and helped her to show the lender that she would be able to service the loan by herself. It allowed her to keep her home, which was so important for her future and well-being. I am passionate about helping women be independent financially.
I really love being part of Smartline, otherwise I wouldn’t have stayed with the company for two decades! The bond the advisers share is really lovely – we help each other out whenever we can, rather than competing with each other.
However, it would really improve the image of the mortgage broking industry if there were more female brokers. Females often have a natural softness and sensitivity about them (which are perfect attributes for a broker), so I think having more females in broking would help to balance out the hard core reputation of the finance industry.
