I love the fact that we can get to know people so well as mortgage brokers and often play an important role in their lives. 10 years ago, I turned around a top-up loan for my clients in just 48 hours, so that they could pay for emergency brain surgery on their teenage daughter. The other day, I met with the daughter who is now a thriving mother of two and buying her first home! This is definitely one of my favourite client experiences.
I’ve also come to know many of the other advisers in the 20 years I’ve been at Smartline and some have become great friends. They not only provide me with professional support but also give me personal encouragement and fulfilment.
I’m finding Gen Y’s and Gen Z’s very inspiring right now. They are so passionate about the future of the planet – they really care about finding a solution to global warming, creating real gender equality and racial diversity and other big issues that perhaps our generation hasn’t dealt that well with. I really respect and value their opinions.
I would love to see more gender balance and diversity in the mortgage and finance industry. Ideally, it should reflect the diversity of our society. I hope that I have been a role model for at least some women in finance and that my leadership has helped more women find their place in this wonderful but still male-dominated industry.
Favourite Quotes: “I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.”
Favourite Book: Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. It is a beautifully written, complex account of the romances and struggles of ordinary people. Stegner has a real sensitivity to the female characters, which is rare for a male author.
What makes me jump out of bed every day: My two West Highland white terriers wanting their morning walk!
